Alternative Tourism

It is a community-based approach that offers an alternative to mass tourism. At 33 North, we believe in the importance of solidarity tourism, particularly in rural environments.

In fact, in many countries of the Southern Hemisphere, industrial tourism is negatively affecting many aspects of life and nature, such as the overexploitation of natural resources, loss of identity, “folklorization” of cultures.

In solidarity tourism, local populations take charge of tourist activities and manage the additional income resulting from such activities, which helps them improve their livelihoods.

As part of this approach, 33 North provides training for the peasants to prepare them to receive tourists, to manage their small tourism business, including hospitality, administrative management and bookkeeping.

When rural populations are empowered with such tools, they are able to better protect their natural heritage while making a sound and wise use of it.
